This season, we are proud to introduce our featured artist and Unbridled Spirit, Sampson Moss of Prairie Winds Hatworks.
Keeping a Western Tradition Alive
Just outside Pincher Creek, Alberta, Sampson Moss spends his days balancing two worlds. By trade, he is a working cowboy. By calling, he is a master hatmaker.
What began as a fascination with hats during his youth evolved into a passion project while attending college. Around 2015, Sampson started reshaping felt hats for himself and friends. What began in a dorm room eventually grew into a respected custom hat business serving clients across North America.
Today, through Prairie Winds Hatworks, Sampson creates one-of-a-kind custom cowboy hats that blend traditional techniques with a deeply personal approach to craftsmanship.
Built for the Individual
In an age of mass production, Sampson's process stands apart.
Rather than relying on standard sizing, he creates a custom wooden sizing block for every client, allowing each hat to be shaped specifically to that person's unique head. Every hat is carefully crafted, measured, and fitted to ensure comfort, function, and timeless style.
The result is more than a hat. It is a piece of wearable art designed to accompany its owner for years, and often decades, to come.
A Craftsman at Heart
Like many of Alberta's most skilled artisans, Sampson's expertise was earned through persistence rather than shortcuts.
Through years of experimentation, restoration work, apprenticeship, and hands-on practice, he developed a deep understanding of an art form that few people continue to pursue today.
His work reflects the same values we admire at Alberta Whisky Cake: patience, dedication, authenticity, and pride in creating something exceptional by hand.
Whether he's shaping felt in the workshop, working cattle, writing poetry, playing music, or repairing heavy equipment, Sampson approaches each endeavor with the same commitment to craftsmanship and excellence.

Sampson Moss exemplifies those qualities.
